STAND STILL
STÉPHANE THIDET 2022
Two trees cut down. One on the site of La chambre d'eau in Favril in the north. The other is in the park of the Familistère de Guise. Two in-situ interventions that resemble each other and resonate with both locations, which are 25 km apart. The trees defy gravity and are artificially kept vertical thanks to a clever construction. Because it is difficult to inhabit the world, Stéphane Thidet causes shifts in the order of things and distractions from reality. “Always standing” questions work with the living: how can you keep a tree (element) upright with the help of another tree (material). Utopia lies in the power of the gesture. The form of the work is created in the dialogue between the artist and its makers.
