At 453 metres high, the Pic du Cap Roux is one of the most iconic and beloved peaks in the Massif de l'Estérel . It is the highest point in this cape area.
Situated in the Massif de l'Estérel , an ancient volcanic mountain range along the Côte d'Azur, the red porphyry (rhyolite) gives the rock its unique colour. The rock is rough, sharp and bright reddish brown — a beautiful contrast with the blue sea and sky — and 250 million years old. In the sun, the rocks glow almost like fire — hence the nickname: " le massif de feu" . “Cap Roux” literally means "red cape".
Several hiking trails lead to the summit: from the Trayas car park (Col de Notre-Dame), via the source and cave of Sainte-Baume / Saint-Honorat or via the Col du Cap Roux (easiest access). The last part is a short, steep path with rocky terrain – no climbing equipment required, but good shoes are!
In the early morning, there is often a mysterious mist — a moment that many hikers describe as "sacred". Fog, strong wind or bright sun can alternate quickly. Many hikers are surprised by this. The thermals around the Pic attract birds of prey .
