Ingrandes - Le Fresne on Loire

A border town between Anjou and Brittany

Located on the pudding stone of Ingrandes, at the borders of Anjou and Brittany, Ingrandes - Le Fresne sur Loire has been shaped along the banks of the royal river, which was one of the main communication routes. For centuries, the port has been the essential passage between the two provinces, a place for the collection of duties and tolls on goods in transit.
The town has thus developed 1500m of walls, slips, quays, and embankments equipped with all the necessary apparatus for river navigation.
Halfway between the two bell towers is Pierre de Bretagne street, marking the limit of the two provinces.
History and geography have united here to create a municipality where the quality of the natural and urban heritage reflects both the richness of past activities and the local dynamism of today. Its iconic suspension bridge, its houses, whether they belong to fishermen or shipowners made of tuff and slate, line the main street. The Loire can be languid at times, at other times capricious or stormy, with an amplitude of over 7m between low and high water. The municipality is also flanked by two old arms of the Loire, thus benefiting from exceptional biodiversity.
In this setting, it houses a collection of clock mechanisms and a unique collection of carpets in France. It also maintains an intangible heritage with a large number of artists residing in the municipality.
