The Citadel of Saint-Tropez was built between 1602 and 1607 , by order of King Henri IV , to protect the city from attacks from the sea – particularly from Barbary pirates and Spanish ships.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, Saint-Tropez was still a small but strategically located port on the Mediterranean. The citadel was built on the hill above the village, providing an excellent view of the bay and direct control over all incoming ships.
The structure featured a hexagonal keep (main tower), thick defensive walls, gun platforms overlooking the sea, a drawbridge, and several bastions.
Throughout the 17th and 19th centuries, the citadel remained an active military stronghold. It offered protection against foreign navies, but also served as a watchtower and garrison , an ammunition depot , and a prison , particularly during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era. During World War II, the citadel was partially damaged but not heavily bombed.
After years of decay, the citadel was restored in the 20th century , and since 2013 it has housed the Musée d'Histoire Maritime – the maritime museum of Saint-Tropez.
Stroll through ancient gates, explore underground passages, and climb to the ramparts for spectacular 360° views of the Bay of Saint-Tropez, the hills of the Massif des Maures, and the glittering Mediterranean Sea. Inside, the Musée d'Histoire Maritime (Museum of Maritime History) captivates visitors with its maritime soul – from fishermen and sailors to adventurers and traders who braved the oceans.
