Croix de Fer - Saint-Tropez

The Croix de Fer is an iron cross, erected in 1827 ( making it one of the oldest public monuments in Saint-Tropez), and stands at the entrance to Saint-Tropez, on the square now known as Square Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny (formerly Place de la Croix de Fer).

The cross was erected as a religious and symbolic monument, a marker for pilgrims and travelers entering the town. It is an important landmark and a symbol of Saint-Tropez's historical and spiritual heritage. It symbolizes protection and faith, a common theme in many southern French towns and cities.

Saint-Tropez lay along ancient pilgrimage routes that ran through southern France. Pilgrims traveling west from Italy, the Alpine region, or Provence often passed through the coastal towns of the Mediterranean before continuing inland toward Santiago de Compostela.

Made of wrought iron, typical of the period, it stands on a stone base, often with a small plaque or inscription (depending on its condition). The simplicity of the design gives it a timeless appearance.
