This cemetery was specifically established for German soldiers who fell during World War I. Here lie German soldiers buried who mainly fell in the last years of the war, especially in the region around Valenciennes. Nearly half of the dead in this cemetery come from Valenciennes, where a military cemetery was set up by the German army in the autumn of 1914. This was in use until the end of the war. Afterward, fallen soldiers from this region were brought together in Frasnoy. Most soldiers died during the heavy fighting of World War I, especially in the final phase of 1918, when the allies launched a major offensive towards the Belgian-French border.
