In search of the flavors of the old border town of Menton along a thousand steps

The yellow of lemon, the taste of limoncello and the ochre of the Cinqueterra await us for this walk in the historic center of Menton.

Start at the "Veille ville - Sablettes" car park.

We're immediately at Le Bastion, a museum housing an important legacy of Jean Cocteau . The view from Plage des Sablettes is a true postcard view : Menton's colorful facades with the Italian mountains in the background.

Here await us the famous steps (escaliers) to the Basilica of Saint-Michel-Archangel.

We continue up the picturesque Rue Mattoni Històrique to visit the Cimetière du Vieux‑Château with its impressive Russian Orthodox chapel. We descend the same route to the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs and then on to the Chapelle de la Miséricorde ou des Pénitents Noirs.

To see, smell, and taste the numerous shops on Rue Sint-Michel, we walk past the town hall to the beginning of the street. Le Comptoir de Mathilde and Au Pays du Citron are definitely worth a visit.

At the Place aux Herbes we turn westwards past the market halls to return to the starting point via the Plage de Fossan and past the Jean Cocteau Museum .
