The Oak and the Reed

The main point of interest on this route is the Diefenbach pond. Covering an area of 75 ha, it is part of the aquatic Maginot Line ponds. It was built before World War II to serve as a natural barrier. Today, it is a haven of peace for the local wildlife, where waterfowl populate the banks, adding a touch of life to this already idyllic landscape.

Bordered by more than 320 hectares of forest, you will appreciate the trails that run along the shores of the pond, the smells of undergrowth in autumn or after a summer rain, and the view of the water, amid some foliage and reeds. The northern loop of the circuit towards Hoste offers a beautiful panoramic view with a viewpoint table on the edge of the forest. The picnic table at this location is ideal for relaxing and enjoying the view.

On the northern bank of the pond, a birdwatching observatory has been set up so you can admire the local wildlife in complete discretion. It’s an opportunity to take the time to observe a wide variety of species that benefit from this beautiful expanse of water: ducks, geese, herons, moorhens, frogs, and toads. Don’t forget to slip a pair of binoculars into your backpack to fully enjoy the nature around you.

- Alternative: For a pleasant stroll with the children, the "Reed Circuit" runs along the shores of the pond, following the brown ring (7.5 km).

- Connections: directly linked to the "Along the Blockhouses" circuit (5.5 km), with no connection. Only a 710 m link to the northern loop of the Hoste Bas pond. Two connections, one of 2.1 km and one of 1.6 km from the southwest tip to the start at the church of Saint-Jean Rohrbach, to take the "Around the Marsh Pond" circuit (11.8 km).
