Arriving on the plateau reveals the winding, steep-sided Automne valley, where the villages of Fresnoy la Rivière and Morienval are nestled. The existence of steep limestone hillsides facilitated the extraction of ashlar from which the valley?s buildings are constructed. These quarries were later used to grow mushrooms. The river was very important to village life, with numerous wash-houses dotting the circuit, as well as a bief (canal that fed the waterfall of the mill) visible at Pondron on the left after the crossroads. The valley bottoms are mainly used for poplar cultivation.
