Hiking Circuit of Mont Vireux

- The Roman Camp: from the beginning of the Christian era, Mount Vireux hosted a Roman camp whose ruins are still visible. Overlooking the valley and its economic activities, its construction marked the beginning of a long history of castles and fortresses. The Roman camp, located on a naturally defended height on four sides, secures the confluence of the Viroin and the Meuse. Its occupants protected and monitored the population as well as economic activities, such as the traffic of merchant ships and iron metallurgy. In Vireux, we were able to study in correlation a fortified habitat, necropolises, and areas of activity established along the banks of the Meuse. Fifteen years of excavations have allowed the study of the defensive system of the Late Empire of the fortification of "Mont Vireux." Circuit accessible to all. Note: - Viewpoint of the Roman camp: located on Mount Vireux, the Roman camp offers a new perspective on Viroquois. - Viewpoint of Béchu: accessible via the Vignes mountain, towards the Roman camp, it offers a wide view of both Vireux and the village of Hierges.
