The Route
From Villé to Sélestat, the route follows the old Salt Road that went from Lorraine to Germany. At the confluence of the Steige and Urbeis valleys lies the lively town of Villé. The town is the capital of kirsch, the production of which remains an important activity in the area, not to mention the many liqueurs made from quince, raspberry, mirabelle... all equally renowned. The itinerary crosses the Alsace vineyard cycling route – EuroVelo 5 at Scherwiller, the capital of Riesling. Nearby, the ruins of Ortenbourg Castle stand out on the mountain. At the junction of the two departments of the Rhine, on the Strasbourg-Colmar-Mulhouse-Basel railway line, the medieval town of Sélestat houses remarkable sites: the Humanist Library (UNESCO), the Church of Saint-Foy, the Commandery of Saint-Jean, as well as the Witch Tower and the residence of Ebersmunster.
