The futuristic Docklands was the former port of the metropolis. It had been decaying for over 15 years: the basins and docks had long become too small for the gigantic modern container ships. In Tilbury, almost 40 kilometers downstream, a new and modern port was established in 1972, making the old facilities redundant. Only when the warehouses and storage houses of St. Katherine's Dock next to the Tower were protected and thoroughly restored did various restaurants, pubs, and shops establish themselves around the harbor basin full of yachts, and discussions about a redevelopment of the Docklands also began. Around the
old harbor basin, architects erected postmodern office buildings.
