In the south of England lies the stone circle of Avebury, which, with its circumference of three-quarters of a mile, is the largest in Great Britain. For seven hundred years, the circle served as a temple for the ritual gatherings of an unknown society.
The fact that an entire village has been built within this stone circle is astounding. People began settling within the stone circle a thousand years ago, and it is incomprehensible that the wonder of Avebury remained hidden from the outside world for such a long time, only to be discovered in 1648 by the antiquarian John Aubrey. He was so impressed by the enormous circumference of Avebury that from that moment on he compared Stonehenge to a small village church and Avebury to a cathedral.
