Allenheads is known as the highest village in England and has a long history in lead mining. In recent years, the village has transformed from a grim mining center shrouded in smog into a beautiful, serene place surrounded by pine trees. Occasionally, the silence in the village is broken by the babbling of a stream.
In 1985, Allenheads was mentioned in national newspapers as the quintessential example of one of England's dying villages. This news alarmed the local population and prompted them to form a trust in order to give the village a new lease on life. The initiative has been remarkably successful, and today there is much to see and do in Allenheads. For example, there is an exhibition about the former mining activities, complete with a visitor center, as well as a shop and a beautiful pub.
