It is somewhat a myth that Londoners hid in the city's subways during World War II. Only 4% of the city took refuge in the subway against the bombings, and there was a good reason for that. The subway stations were very dangerous during a direct hit because of the sharp tiles that would fly around. For example, there were 20 deaths at Marble Arch station, 111 deaths at Bank Station, and 600 deaths at Balham station.
