It is somewhat of a myth that Londoners hid in the city's tube during World War II. Only 4% of the city took refuge in the underground against the bombings, and there was a good reason for that. The subway stations were very dangerous in the event of a direct hit due to the sharp tiles that would fly around. For example, there were 20 deaths at Marble Arch station, 111 deaths at Bank station, and 600 deaths at Balham station.
