City of London

London is the capital of the United Kingdom and de facto of England and one of the largest cities in Europe. It is located in the south of the island of Great Britain and is a few hours from the English Channel, which separates the United Kingdom from France. To the north are the counties of Essex and Hertfordshire, to the west the counties of Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, while to the south are Kent and Surrey.
London is made up of the City and 32 boroughs. The heart of the city, the ancient City of London, still retains its medieval boundaries, but since the 19th century the term London also refers to the totality of the metropolis that has developed around it. The current conurbation forms the Greater London area and the administrative area of Greater London. Today, the City is a small part of London, exactly 2.6 km², but it retains its status as a city and as a ceremonial county of England, while the 32 boroughs of London are part of the ceremonial county of Greater London. Three of the 32 boroughs have special status, Westminster has city status, the borough of Kingston upon Thames and Kensington and Chelsea have royal borough status.
