Carlisle

Carlisle is just a few kilometers away from the Scottish border and has, because of this fact as a major border town, dealt with a turbulent history. The Romans built a wall through the city. Vikings invaded it, and the Scots and English fought there for many years. Today, the city welcomes its guests with open arms as the commercial, communication, and administrative center of Cumbria. However, it wasn't that long ago that every visitor was treated with suspicion. The city was the focal point of bitter feuds and bloody wars during these periods, created by long-standing disputes over the borders between England and Scotland. Early in its history, Carlisle was an important Roman headquarters before Hadrian's Wall. In 1092, the son of William the Conqueror, William Rufus, began building the castle where the unfortunate Mary, Queen of Scots, was later imprisoned.
