In this place, a chapel was first built in the 12th century. In the 14th and 16th centuries, significant expansions took place. During the English Civil War, it was an important and symbolic stronghold for the Scots. In 1651, the Scottish crown jewels were transferred to the castle. After an eight-month siege by the English, the castle fell. In the years that followed, the castle served, among other things, as a prison. Throughout the 18th century, the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair.
