Slaughter's coffee house

At the intersection of Cranbourn Street and St Martin's Lane used to be the Slaughters coffee house. The curious French mathematician Abraham de Moivre was a regular here. In the mathematical field, he is known for De Moivre's theorem and for his work in the field of probability theory. But he is mainly famous for the legend that he predicted the exact date of his own death. At the end of his life, he noticed that he needed 15 minutes more sleep every day, so he stated that he would die on the day he slept exactly 24 hours. A simple extrapolation showed that this would first happen on November 27, 1754. Indeed, he died on that very day. He was buried in St. Martin-in-the-Fields. However, his remains were later moved. In the Slaughters coffee house he regularly came to play chess to earn money.
