Sotheby's regularly makes headlines with astronomical amounts for artworks. This was also the case on November 20, 2024, with a banana.
Six million dollars for a banana and a roll of duct tape. The artwork ‘Comedian’ by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, consisting of a banana taped to the wall, was sold at Sotheby’s for $6.2 million – four times its initially estimated value. The buyer was Chinese cryptocurrency mogul Justin Sun. He was aware that the banana in question had been purchased that very morning for 35 cents at a nearby supermarket. That couldn't be otherwise, as the artwork is already five years old. A banana doesn't last that long.
