York is a very beautiful city where you can easily fill 5 days with all kinds of very diverse activities. There is the Minster, the York Castle Museum, the Yorkshire Museum, the almost completely intact city walls, Barley Hall, the Shambles and Stonegate, the Jorvik Viking Centre (!) and last but not least: the Snickelways. Snickelways are narrow streets, passages and alleys between the main streets. They have a long and eventful history and every Snickelway has its own story. Some of these passages are barely a meter wide. Once you know them, they form a quiet connection, away from the shopping crowd.
You can start this walk at the Lamb & Lion Inn. Behind this pub is a large terrace next to the city wall.
Make this walk preferably before 5 pm because 2 Snickelways will be closed. They can also be closed on Sundays and Mondays.
If you want to know the full story behind every Snickelway and take a longer walk, buy the very nicely written "A walk around the Snickelways of York" by Mark Jones in some York bookstore.
