The island Sapientza, southe of Methoni was a favourite harbour for fleets planning to attack Methoni or Koroni. So it was for the Genoan Andrea Doria, in 1532. He moored first with a fleet of 39 galleys and 60 other ships to free the Messinian coast from the Turks. He went from Sapientza to Koroni and destroyed the Turks during the 3rd Turkish-Venetian war.
