The Bourzi of Methoni was for many periods a prison. Charles Duval, a French interpreter at Constantinople, describes that in 1826, the prisoners were sitting here in the Bourzi in mud created by the seawater. It was here that the Bishop of Methoni, Grigorios, was tortured to death on May 11 1825 after the unsuccessful revolution against the Turks in Methoni and Pylos.
