Most of the rocks and soils they have on Naxos are not that great to capture and store water. The crystalline rocks (schists, gneisses, migmatite, granodiorite and marbles) that compose the major part of Naxos have a low primary permeability; the ability to transmit water through them depends on a fracture and/or solution-induced secondary permeability. The main parameter that controls the groundwater flow regime in fractured aquifers such as tehe crystalline rocks is the fracture pattern.
