At the entrance of the temple of Apollo, pilgrims were greeted by the inscription "Know thyself!". In his book Sapiens, Yuval Noah Harari points out what the meaning of the sentence is: "The implication was tat the average person is ignorant of his true self, and is therefore likely to be ignorant of true happiness."
