The French chose an excellent strategic location for this castle. From here they saw both their harbor near modern Killini, and the entire western strait between the Peloponnese and Zakynthos - Kefalonia, and the entrance to the bay of Korynthe. The northwestern coastal strip has few high hills. The hill of Kastro is the highest point in the wider area. In itself a strange relic, because it is a remnant of the marl area that once covered the entire plain east of this place. But that layer was completely eroded.
