The modern name of Porto Heli translates to the 'Bay of Eels'. One obvious theory states that eels was the mainstay of the fishing industry many years ago. But other theories state that the name Heli comes from a gradual linguistic corruption of the name "Alies" or "Halieis", the ancient city that is located on the southeastern side of the port. The city of Halieis is now half sunken in the sea.
