Although it looks like seismic activity is sudden, and infrequent, measuruments during a small period (2 months) show that there is a permanent seismic activity in this area. In autumn 2006, a combined on/offshore seismic network, consisting of 17 ocean bottom seismographs and of 15 land-stations, was deployed in the Kyparissia Gulf and in the surrounding area of the western Peloponnese. The seismic activity was recorded for a period of 2 months. More than 3,500 earthquakes were identified. This is linked to the active system of the Hellenig Arc & Hellenic Trench.
