Coastline -18,000 years

In the Upper Paloelithic period, about 18,000 years ago, the coastline ran much further seaward, about 7km away from the Franchthi cave. The entire bay of Kilada was virtually dry. The sea level was -120m versus the current sea level. The climate was colder and drie than today. The bay was a mediterranean steppe with shrub vegetation and grasslands. Large mammals such as aurochs (see picture), red deer, wild ass and wild goates lived there.
