The underground cisterns of Mycenae contain a remarkable underground passage that ran 18 meters below the ground. This construction served to maintain access to a spring outside the city walls during sieges. The passage featured stairs and bends to mislead intruders, indicating defensive strategies against hostile infiltration. The Mycenaeans combined this passage with normal cisterns to create double water security, essential for a city without a natural spring on the Acropolis. This technical achievement illustrates Mycenaean expertise in military and civil engineering, with underground infrastructure literally and figuratively supporting the foundations of their civilization.
