The eruption of the Tambora volcano in 1815 was historic. There was so much dust in the atmosphere the following year that the year 1816 was known as the year without sun. The harvest failed. There is also a link between the volcano and painting. It was in the years following the eruption that the painter Turner painted beautiful sunsets. It was the fine volcanic dust that caused beautiful light shades worldwide.
