The Irish folk-punk legend Shane MacGowan died peacefully at his home in Dublin, on Thursday, November 30, 2023.The funeral of Shane MacGowan was held in his home county of Tipperary in December 2023, where MacGowan grew up until moving back to the UK. Born in Kent, England, to Irish parents, MacGowan spent his early childhood in Tipperary, Ireland, before returning to England aged six and a half.
The mass in Nenagh was open to the public after his remains were brought through Dublin City in a procession in the morning. The Pogues singer’s remains were brought in a funeral cortege from his family’s homeplace of Nenagh to Dublin back to Tipperary for cremation.
“For my funeral I’d like them to play I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen,” he told the Sunday Independent at a private event in New York. Written in 1875, 10 years after the end of the American Civil War, in which Irish emigrants died in great numbers, the ballad is a poignant promise to bring a beloved wife home.
