Clonakilty in West Cork became Ireland's very first Autism Friendly Town in 2018 and still serves as an example for other cities and villages.
For that title, at least 25% of businesses and associations, 50% of public services, schools, and healthcare providers had to undergo training, and 25% of the population had to be actively reached, all bundled into a multi-year plan.
Many organizations are recognized as “Autism Friendly Champions”: they display a sticker at the entrance, have trained staff, often offer quiet times/spaces, and allow assistance dogs inside.
SuperValu and other stores introduced “quiet shopping” moments with less light and sound, and there are online “social stories” so you can see in advance how a visit to a store or location unfolds, making new situations more predictable.
Work experience programs for young people with autism are running, and there is active involvement from schools, parents, and local associations, resulting in the entire community having a higher level of basic knowledge and acceptance.
