Description by the author

Access: Glenveagh national park is well signposted and its visitors centre has ample parking (OSI Map 6, grid ref: C039 233). For those looking begin the Bridle path at its southern end, parking is limited and is accessed by a small local road ( OSI Map 6, grid ref: B970 158).

Hike Distance: 11km (Visitors centre to castle 3km) - Linear walk

Difficulty: Easy - Lowland walking on relatively flat ground with a defined pathway

Time to complete: 2.5 - 3hrs (Including return walk 5 - 6hrs) - 45min to castle from visitors centre

Notable features and additional info: This is a linear walk, so it will be necessary to return to the start using the same route if you haven't pre-arranged transport to either end of the trek. A regular bus service is available in the summer months from the visitors centre to the castle for those wishing to cut short their walk.

The route highlighted above takes you along Glenveagh valley with the spectacular lough at your side. The castle grounds have fantastic gardens that are also worth visiting. There is a cafe in the visitors centre and castle, however it is still recommended to bring some snacks and fluids for your walk.

For those a bit more adventurous and looking for a challenge, there is the option to go off track and climb to higher ground, but be advised that ground underfoot can be wet. If you are thinking of exploring the higher ground, be sure to have appropriate equipment with you and pre-plan your hike.

The park is home to Red Deer so if you're lucky you may come across some on your walk. For those going off track, it is necessary to take precautions against ticks as they are in abundance in certain areas.
