The remote corner of land around Carrowteigue is one of Ireland’s hidden gems, and rivals anywhere in the country for its rugged natural beauty. This is a coastline defined by towering sea cliffs, caves and islands, with the magnificent Stags of Broadhaven crowning it all.

There are four signed walking circuits around the village, all focussing on the unique shoreline. This route is the most strenuous offering, and is signed by purple arrows.

You begin by following a bog road around an open mountainside, to reach the coastal hamlet of Portacloy. Then turn west and follow the cliffs up and over Benwee Head, where the drop to the ocean is sheer, and extends to over 250m. The stunning views more than justify the effort of the climb, and are equally as enthralling during the descent. A final bog track delivers you back to the start.
