The port of Genoa is adjacent to the historic center. Originally, this was a downside - as an international toll area, it was cut off from the city - but now that the fence has disappeared, you can easily walk from the old streets to the waterfront. Since then, several striking attractions have been added to the old port. One of these is the Bigo, designed by the Genoese architect Renzo Piano. Its crane-like appearance keeps the harbor feel alive while you, as a tourist, are hoisted up in a glass box, enjoying the increasingly grand view. The Acquario has become one of the most visited attractions in Italy.
