In 1949 Madonna del Ghisallo was proclaimed patron saint of cyclists by Pope Pius XII on the proposal of the priest Ermelindo Viganò. Since then, the church has been visited by cycling tourists. Madonna del Ghisallo was already the patron saint of the traveler. This because her appearance would have saved the life of the traveling count Ghisallo who was attacked by robbers.
