The Piazza di Santa Maria in Trastevere is one of the most important squares in Rome, located in the center of the Trastevere district.
The square takes its name from the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere, founded in the 3rd century by Pope Callixtus I. It was renovated in the 12th century by the will of Pope Innocent II. In the center, there is a fountain of the same name, one of the oldest in Rome, which has undergone several restorations over the centuries, until the end of the 17th century by the Italo-Swiss architect Carlo Fontana.
