The FCA plant in Melfi is an automotive plant of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. It is located in the Italian region of Basilicata, a few kilometers north of Melfi near the village of San Nicola.
The then Fiat plant was built between 1991 and 1993 on an area of 270 hectares. The state supported the construction in the agriculturally characterized area to promote the local economy and create jobs. Under the name Società Automobilistica Tecnologie Avanzate, a highly automated production facility was established, which went into operation in 1994. Initially, the Fiat Punto was manufactured in Melfi, and from 1996 the Lancia Y as well, as both models shared several components. In 1999, the facility in Melfi was modernized for the second generation of the Punto, and then again in 2003 for the Lancia Ypsilon. In 2004, the plant was struck for three weeks due to wages that were 20 percent lower than those of other Fiat plants at the time, among other disadvantages, after which Fiat met the demands of the strikers. In 2005, Fiat relocated the production of the Lancia Ypsilon to the Termini Imerese plant in Sicily, which was closed a few years later. In Melfi, the production of the second generation Punto remained, to which the Fiat Grande Punto and the Fiat Punto Evo were later added. In 2010, strikes occurred again due to staff reductions and higher productivity demands. In mid-2013, a modernization of the plant began for the production of the Jeep Renegade and the Fiat 500X. Due to the positive developments, not only was the staff laid off since 2010 re-hired, but additional personnel from the FCA plants in Cassino and Pomigliano d’Arco were also transferred to Melfi, and new staff was hired.
