Castle of Castiglione delle Stiviere

The castle of Castiglione delle Stiviere is a military structure that probably arose in the 9th century on a pre-existing Roman castrum at the top of a hill overlooking the town. It was the residence of the Gonzaga Lords of Castiglione.

In 1310 it was assaulted by the troops of Cangrande della Scala of Verona who fought against Brescia.
At the beginning of the 15th century it passed to the Gonzaga of Mantua, and Ludovico II carried out consolidation work on the walls. In 1491, Ludovico III Gonzaga commissioned the architect Giovanni da Padova to erect a new fortress.
With Ferrante Gonzaga, the Marquis of Castiglione, the castle became the seat of his court. Within these walls, on March 9, 1568, Saint Louis was born.
