El castillo de Castiglione delle Stiviere es una estructura militar que probablemente fue construida en el siglo IX sobre un castrum romano preexistente en la cima de una colina que domina el pueblo. Fue la residencia de los Gonzaga, señores de Castiglione.
En 1310 fue atacado por las tropas de Cangrande della Scala de Verona, que luchaba contra Brescia.
A principios del siglo XV, pasó a manos de los Gonzaga de Mantua y Ludovico II realizó trabajos para reforzar las murallas. En 1491, Ludovico III Gonzaga encargó al arquitecto Giovanni da Padova la construcción de una nueva fortaleza.
Con Ferrante Gonzaga, el marqués de Castiglione, el castillo se convirtió en la sede de su corte. Entre estas murallas, el 9 de marzo de 1568, nació San Luis.
