The ossuary of Solferino is a monumental ossuary located in the homonymous municipality in the province of Mantova, near the Rocca di Solferino and the Museum of the Risorgimento of Solferino and San Martino.
It is housed within the church of San Pietro in Vincoli, the oldest in the municipality, which was later converted into an ossuary. It holds 1,413 skulls and the bones of 7,000 fallen soldiers from the four armies that faced off on June 24, 1859, in the bloody battle of Solferino and San Martino, a conflict of the second Italian war of independence. The ossuary of Solferino is reached by walking along a tree-lined avenue bordered by cypress trees.
