The church, with the cloister belonging first to the Benedictine monks and from the 12th century to the Camaldolese monks, was built around 1016 and renovated several times, especially after the air raids of the Second World War. The outer facade, which was spared by the bombardment, dates from the 13th-14th century, while the interior dates from the 11th-12th century and has been heavily modified.
The monumental interior, which has been extensively renovated, has three naves and eight bays and is covered with trusses in the central nave.
In the interior is a marble crucifix, attributed to Nino Pisano (14th century). The 18th-century polychrome marble main altar depicts the Madonna with Child and Saints.
