Lucca is known for its city walls. It is one of the few cities in the world whose city walls have remained completely intact. The city walls are perfect for a beautiful walk or bike ride. There are even some catering establishments on the walls. Particularly in the summer months, the city walls are filled with joggers, walkers and cyclists.
Lucca has always been walled with the oldest city walls dating from the second century BC. These earthen walls have been replaced over the centuries by walls that were later moved. You can enter the city or drive through one of the six city gates.
What is special is that the city walls of Lucca never had to serve as defensive walls. The walls did protect the city against a flood. The wall has a total length of about four kilometers.
