The Piazza Papa Giovanni XIII in Pistoia is best known for the Ospedale del Ceppo.
This is an old hospital in Pistoia, founded in the 13th century.
According to legend, the name is derived from a stump that bloomed miraculously in winter and which, according to an apparition of the Virgin Mary, pointed the pious husbands Antimo and Bendinella the place to found the hospital. Another possibility is that the name may have been derived from the hollow "stump" of the chestnut used for collecting offerings.
It was the city hospital until July 21, 2013, when it was replaced by the new San Jacopo Hospital, located in the southern part of the city.
