The Academy of Sciences of Siena, known as the Accademia dei Fisiocritici, is one of the oldest scientific institutions in Italy. In the eighteenth century it enjoyed enormous prestige in cultural circles all over Europe, and important intellectuals of the time were among its members. Founded for the purpose of studying the truth of natural phenomena, more than three centuries later it continues its mission of scientific communication through museum education, the publication of magazines, and activities and events open to the public. Today, the Accademia is a real cultural space, hosting concerts, theater, art exhibitions, children's entertainment and many other initiatives.
Since 1816, the Accademia has been housed in the buildings of the Camaldolese Monastery of the Rose, which date from the twelfth century. The building was confiscated in Napoleonic times and later donated to the Academy of Sciences of Siena as a permanent seat. The exhibition space around the cloister covers two floors and in addition there are halls on the ground floor (including the large Auditorium), in the basement and an elevated first floor.
