This is the oldest church in Certaldo and probably dates from the 13th century, in the church there is a date of 1215 scratched into the wall. However, due to subsidence of the hill on which the church is built, a large part of the original cloister and the apse of the church were lost in the 16th century.
Due to the stability problems, the church was closed in 1788 and from then on it was given various functions including storage place, workspace and restaurant, before finally being restored in 1946. The church houses a large number of fresco paintings that were stabilized in 1962.
Currently, the church is used as an exhibition space and as a space for conferences and is part of the museum of Palazzo Pretorio.
In the chapel to the right of the main altar is the fourteenth-century crucifix, the object of prayer and veneration by Blessed Giulia Della Rena, once in the ancient church of Saints Thomas and Prospero, in the upper village.
