This Romanesque church contains the remains of the writer and poet Giovanni Boccaccio and of Giulia della Rena, patron saint of Certaldo. Adjacent to the church is a monastery and a convent which, since 2001, has housed the Museo di arte sacra del luogo (museum of sacred art objects).
The church was probably built from the end of the 12th century, at the same time as the oldest core of Certaldo alto.
The interior is very sober and almost without any kind of decoration due to the restoration carried out in the 19th century when all the plasterwork and fresco paintings were removed.
In the center of the church is a white marble tombstone depicting Boccaccio, but this stone dates from the early 20th century and serves only to commemorate Certaldo's most famous inhabitant. Boccaccio's remains are located under the diamond-shaped tile at the head of the tombstone.
