Occupying a privileged location in the center of Palermo's Cathedral Square, this monument is dedicated to Santa Rosalia, patron saint of the city.
It was made of white marble by V. Vitaliano in the year 1744.
There is a legend about Santa Rosalia: Rosalia Sinibaldi was a noble girl of Norman origin who retreated to live in the mountains and lived the life of a hermit. Centuries later , Palermo was struck by the plague and it is said that Santa Rosalia appeared to a hunter, showed him the way to find her remains and asked him to carry them in procession through the city.
According to legend, the sick recovered wherever they took them, ending the epidemic.
A shrine was subsequently built in her honor on the top of Monte Pellegrino, and Rosalia was elected patroness of Palermo.
